The Passive Voice with the Present Perfect
At B2 level, the passive with the present perfect (passato prossimo) is formed with essere in the present perfect + a past participle that agrees in gender and number.
Formation
essere (present perfect) + past participle
- Actif : Hanno scoperto un nuovo pianeta. → Passif : È stato scoperto un nuovo pianeta.
- Actif : Hanno dimostrato la teoria. → Passif : La teoria è stata dimostrata.

Nuance: essere vs venire
- essere + p.p. → resulting state or a completed past action
- Il vaccino è stato approvato. — The vaccine has been approved.
- venire + p.p. → ongoing or repeated action (present/imperfect only)
- I risultati vengono verificati ogni anno. — The results are verified every year.

B2 tip: In Italian scientific texts, the passive voice is very common because it foregrounds the action rather than the agent — just as in academic English.
