Expressing Your Opinion in Italian
At B1 level, Italian has several key structures for giving your opinion:
Penso che... (I think that...)
- Penso che tu abbia ragione. (I think you are right.)
- Penso che sia una buona idea. (I think it is a good idea.)
- Important: penso che requires the subjunctive (congiuntivo).
Credo che... (I believe that...)
- Credo che lui venga domani. (I believe he is coming tomorrow.)
- Credo che la situazione sia difficile. (I believe the situation is difficult.)
Secondo me... (In my opinion... / According to me...)
- Secondo me, il film era noioso. (In my opinion, the film was boring.)
- Secondo me, dovremmo aspettare. (In my opinion, we should wait.)
- This structure is followed by the indicative — much simpler!
A mio avviso... (In my view...)
- A mio avviso, questa è la soluzione migliore. (In my view, this is the best solution.)
- More formal than secondo me, mostly used in writing.
Key rule: After penso che and credo che, use the present subjunctive. After secondo me and a mio avviso, use the indicative.
