Possessive adjectives and family vocabulary

In Italian, possessive adjectives agree in gender and number with the thing possessed (not the owner). This is different from English, where "his/her" depends on the owner.

Possessive adjectives:

• my : Masculine sg. il mio · Feminine sg. la mia · Masculine pl. i miei · Feminine pl. le mie
• your (informal) : Masculine sg. il tuo · Feminine sg. la tua · Masculine pl. i tuoi · Feminine pl. le tue
• his/her : Masculine sg. il suo · Feminine sg. la sua · Masculine pl. i suoi · Feminine pl. le sue
• our : Masculine sg. il nostro · Feminine sg. la nostra · Masculine pl. i nostri · Feminine pl. le nostre
• your (plural) : Masculine sg. il vostro · Feminine sg. la vostra · Masculine pl. i vostri · Feminine pl. le vostre
• their : Masculine sg. il loro · Feminine sg. la loro · Masculine pl. i loro · Feminine pl. le loro

Special rule for family members: With singular, unmodified family members, you DROP the article:

• mia madre (my mother) — NOT "la mia madre"
• tuo fratello (your brother) — NOT "il tuo fratello"

But you KEEP the article when:

• The family word is plural: i miei fratelli (my brothers)
• The family word has an adjective: il mio fratello maggiore (my older brother)
• Using "loro": la loro madre (their mother)
• Using affectionate forms: la mia mamma (my mom)

💬 Esempio: "Mia sorella si chiama Giulia." → "My sister's name is Giulia."

💬 Esempio: "I miei genitori vivono a Roma." → "My parents live in Rome."

• il padre / la madre → father / mother
• il fratello / la sorella → brother / sister
• il nonno / la nonna → grandfather / grandmother
• lo zio / la zia → uncle / aunt
• il cugino / la cugina → cousin (m/f)
• il marito / la moglie → husband / wife
