The Evolution of Hindi

Hindi is not a static entity but a living, evolving system whose current form reflects millennia of contact, borrowing, and transformation. Understanding भाषा-विकास (language development) at the C2 level means tracing the genealogy of Hindi from its Vedic Sanskrit roots through the Prakrits, Apabhramsha, and finally into the distinct modern form that emerged in the 19th century.

The layered vocabulary of Hindi reveals this history directly. Words fall into four principal strata:

तत्सम (Tatsam) words are taken directly from Sanskrit with minimal phonological change — कार्य, विद्या, सत्य. They give Hindi its classical elevation and are the vocabulary of formal registers, philosophy, and legal discourse.

तद्भव (Tadbhav) words evolved through Prakrit and Apabhramsha and are phonologically simplified — कान (from Sanskrit कर्ण), दाँत (from दन्त), काम (from कर्म). They form the intimate, bodily, and domestic lexicon.

देशज (Deshaj) words are of uncertain or non-Sanskrit origin, often from tribal or pre-Aryan substrates — खिड़की, लोटा, थाली.

विदेशज (Videshaj) words come from Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Portuguese, and English through centuries of contact — कागज़, किताब, जुर्माना, स्टेशन.

Language change operates through predictable processes: ध्वनि-परिवर्तन (sound change), अर्थ-परिवर्तन (semantic shift), and रूप-परिवर्तन (morphological change). The Hindustani of Mir and Ghalib, the formal Khari Boli of Bharatendu Harishchandra, and today s media Hindi are all moments in an unbroken continuum of transformation.
