School Life — Talking About Studies

Describing your school routine (past tense):

  • मैं रोज़ स्कूल जाता था। (maiṁ roz skūl jātā thā) — I used to go to school every day.
  • हमने कल परीक्षा दी। (hamne kal parīkṣā dī) — We took an exam yesterday.
  • शिक्षक ने पाठ पढ़ाया। (śikṣak ne pāṭh paṛhāyā) — The teacher taught a lesson.

In past tense with transitive verbs, Hindi uses the ने (ne) construction: the subject takes ने and the verb agrees with the object, not the subject.

Talking about subjects:

  • मेरा पसंदीदा विषय गणित था। (merā pasandīdā viṣay gaṇit thā) — My favourite subject was maths.
  • मुझे विज्ञान अच्छा लगता है। (mujhe vigyān acchā lagtā hai) — I like science.

Future plans:

  • मैं कल स्कूल जाऊँगा। (maiṁ kal skūl jāūṅgā) — I will go to school tomorrow.
  • हम अगले हफ़्ते परीक्षा देंगे। (ham agle hafte parīkṣā deṅge) — We will take an exam next week.

Useful school phrases:

  • कक्षा में बैठो। (kakṣā meṁ baiṭho) — Sit in the classroom.
  • गृहकार्य पूरा करो। (gṛhakārya pūrā karo) — Complete your homework.

Expressões

  • मैंने गृहकार्य पूरा किया।I completed my homework (past tense)
  • शिक्षक ने क्या पढ़ाया?What did the teacher teach?
  • कल परीक्षा होगी।There will be an exam tomorrow
  • मुझे यह विषय कठिन लगता है।I find this subject difficult
  • कक्षा कितने बजे शुरू होती है?What time does the class start?

Erros frequentes

  • मैं ने किताब पढ़ा।
    मैंने किताब पढ़ी।

किताब is feminine, so the past participle must agree: पढ़ी not पढ़ा. Also मैंने is written as one word, not मैं ने.

  • शिक्षक ने पढ़ाया पाठ।
    शिक्षक ने पाठ पढ़ाया।

In Hindi, the object comes before the verb — the word order is Subject + ने + Object + Verb.

  • हम कल परीक्षा देंगा।
    हम कल परीक्षा देंगे।

हम (we) requires the plural verb form देंगे, not the singular देंगा.
