Asking for Directions in Hindi

Asking where something is

The key question pattern is:

[place] कहाँ है? ([place] kahaan hai?) — Where is [place]?

  • बस स्टेशन कहाँ है? (bas station kahaan hai?) — Where is the bus station?
  • नज़दीकी दुकान कहाँ है? (nazdeeki dukaan kahaan hai?) — Where is the nearest shop?

Giving directions

  • दाएँ मुड़िए (daayen mudiye) — Turn right
  • बाएँ मुड़िए (baayen mudiye) — Turn left
  • सीधे जाइए (seedhe jaiye) — Go straight ahead
  • यहाँ से पास है (yahaan se paas hai) — It is close from here
  • वहाँ से दूर है (vahaan se door hai) — It is far from there

Using postpositions with directions

Hindi uses postpositions after nouns (opposite of English prepositions):

  • दुकान के पास (dukaan ke paas) — near the shop
  • स्कूल के सामने (school ke saamne) — in front of the school
  • बैंक के पीछे (bank ke peechhe) — behind the bank
  • सिग्नल के बाद (signal ke baad) — after the traffic light

Polite request form

Use मुझे बताइए (mujhe bataiye) — Please tell me:

  • मुझे बताइए, यहाँ से अस्पताल कहाँ है? — Please tell me, where is the hospital from here?

Expressões

  • ...कहाँ है?Where is...?
  • यहाँ से कितनी दूर है?How far is it from here?
  • दाएँ मुड़िए।Turn right.
  • सीधे जाइए।Go straight ahead.
  • पास ही है।It is right nearby.

Erros frequentes

  • कहाँ है बस स्टेशन?
    बस स्टेशन कहाँ है?

In Hindi questions, the subject comes first, then kahaan hai. Do not put kahaan hai before the noun.

  • मैं दाएँ जाता
    दाएँ मुड़िए

When giving directions, use the polite imperative form mudiye (turn) or jaiye (go), not a personal verb.

  • दुकान पास
    दुकान के पास

Postpositions in Hindi require the particle ke before paas, saamne, peechhe, etc.
