The inverted pyramid in German journalism

German journalistic style follows the umgekehrte Pyramide: the most important information first, details afterwards.

Article structure: 1. Schlagzeile (headline): short, punchy, informative 2. Vorspann (lead): summary of essential facts (who, what, when, where) 3. Hauptteil (body): details, context, quotes 4. Hintergrund (background): supplementary information

Integrating quotes:

Laut dem Sprecher des Ministeriums... → According to the ministry spokesperson...
Wie die Kanzlerin betonte, ... → As the chancellor emphasised...
Konjunktiv I is mandatory to mark distance: Er sagte, das sei eine Priorität.

This style demands concision, apparent objectivity, and information hierarchy.
