In German, formal inversions place an adverb or negative element at the beginning of the sentence, forcing the verb into second position and the subject after it. This creates an elevated, literary tone.

Negative/restrictive inversion:

  • Selten sieht man solche Qualität. (Rarely does one see such quality.)
  • Nie zuvor hatte er so etwas erlebt. (Never before had he experienced such a thing.)

"Nicht nur... sondern auch" with inversion:

  • Nicht nur hat er zugestimmt, sondern auch aktiv mitgewirkt. (Not only did he agree, but he also actively participated.)

Kaum... als/da (Scarcely... when):

  • Kaum hatte sie das Haus verlassen, da begann es zu regnen. (Scarcely had she left the house when it began to rain.)

These inversions are common in formal writing, speeches, and literary German. They add emphasis and sophistication to your expression.

  • Selten sieht man...Formal emphasis on rarity
  • Nie zuvor hatte...Emphasizing unprecedented events

After a fronted adverb, the verb must come in second position, before the subject.

  • Nicht nur er hat zugestimmt
    Nicht nur hat er zugestimmt

With nicht nur at the start, the verb must precede the subject for formal inversion.

  • Kaum sie hatte das Haus verlassen
Kaum hatte sie das Haus verlassen

After kaum, the auxiliary verb must come before the subject.

  • Nie zuvor er hatte so etwas erlebt
Nie zuvor hatte er so etwas erlebt

The verb-second rule applies: the finite verb must follow the fronted element directly.

  • Unter keinen Umständen man darf das tun
Unter keinen Umständen darf man das tun

The modal verb must occupy second position after the fronted prepositional phrase.
