German cleft sentences (Spaltsätze) allow you to emphasize a specific element by restructuring the sentence. This is a powerful C1 tool for adding focus.
Es ist/war... der/die/das (It is/was... who/that):
- Es war Hans, der das Problem gelöst hat. (It was Hans who solved the problem.)
- Es ist die Qualität, die zählt. (It is the quality that counts.)
Was... ist/war (What... is/was):
- Was mich stört, ist die Unehrlichkeit. (What bothers me is the dishonesty.)
- Was wir brauchen, ist mehr Zeit. (What we need is more time.)
Adverb fronting for emphasis:
- Gerade dieses Thema ist besonders wichtig. (It is precisely this topic that is especially important.)
- Ausgerechnet heute regnet es. (Of all days, it rains today.)
These structures shift the reader's attention to the most important part of the message, making your German more precise and impactful.
