Nominalisations transform verbs and adjectives into nouns, making German academic writing denser and more formal. This is a hallmark of scientific texts.
Verb to noun transformations:
- untersuchen → die Untersuchung (to investigate → the investigation)
- analysieren → die Analyse (to analyse → the analysis)
- sich entwickeln → die Entwicklung (to develop → the development)
Common patterns:
- Verbs ending in -ieren → -ierung: finanzieren → die Finanzierung
- Verbs with -en → -ung: forschen → die Forschung
- Adjectives → -heit/-keit: wirksam → die Wirksamkeit
In academic context:
- Instead of: Man untersucht, wie Kinder lernen.
- Write: Die Untersuchung des Lernverhaltens von Kindern...
Nominalisations make sentences more compact but can reduce readability. Use them strategically in formal writing while keeping a balance.
