1. Falsos amigos avançados

  • actually ≠ actualmente → significa «na realidade / de facto»
  • eventually ≠ eventualmente → significa «por fim / a longo prazo»
  • consistent ≠ consistente → significa «coerente / regular»
  • pretend ≠ pretender → significa «fingir»

2. Estruturas sintácticas defeituosas

  • Dangling modifier: "Having reviewed the data, the report was submitted." → Quem analisou os dados?
  • Correct: "Having reviewed the data, we submitted the report."
  • Referência ambígua: "The manager told the analyst that his report was late." → De quem é o relatório?

3. Redundâncias subtis

  • "past history" → history já implica o passado
  • "completely finished" → finished já é total
  • "end result" → result já implica um fim

Coesão: ligar as ideias

Usa conectores lógicos variados para evitar repetir "and" ou "but":

  • Causa: therefore, hence, consequently, as a result
  • Concessão: nevertheless, albeit, while, notwithstanding
  • Adição: furthermore, in addition, besides
  • Contraste: conversely, on the contrary, whereas

  • The results were eventually positive → The results were ultimately positive.

  • Having reviewed the data, the report was submitted → Having reviewed the data, we submitted the report.

  • The past history shows a clear trend → The history shows a clear trend.

'Past history' é redundante — 'history' já implica o passado.

  • He is consistent with his work → He is consistent in his work.

Erros frequentes

  • The results were eventually positive
    The results were ultimately positive

    'Eventually' significa «por fim», não «eventualmente».

  • Having reviewed the data, the report was submitted
Having reviewed the data, we submitted the report

  • The past history shows a clear trend

He is consistent in his work

  • Walking through the park, the trees were beautiful.
Walking through the park, I noticed the beautiful trees.

  • The team have been working hard; the project is a failure.
The team have been working hard; however, the project has not met expectations.
