Formal Register: Salutations and Closings
Dutch formal letters follow strict conventions for openings, closings, and tone.
Aanhef (Salutation):
- Geachte heer/mevrouw, — Dear Sir/Madam (unknown gender)
- Geachte heer Jansen, — Dear Mr. Jansen
- Geachte mevrouw De Vries, — Dear Mrs. De Vries
Opening lines:
- Naar aanleiding van uw brief van... — In response to your letter of...
- Hierbij verzoek ik u om... — I hereby request you to...
- Met betrekking tot uw verzoek... — Regarding your request...
Formal tone markers:
- Gaarne (gladly/kindly): Ik zou u gaarne willen verzoeken... — I would kindly like to request...
- Teneinde (in order to): Teneinde de procedure af te ronden... — In order to complete the procedure...
- Desbetreffend (concerning): Ik verwijs u desbetreffend naar... — I refer you in this regard to...
Afsluiting (Closing):
- Hoogachtend, — Yours faithfully (very formal)
- Met vriendelijke groet, — Kind regards (standard formal)
- In afwachting van uw reactie, — Awaiting your response,
The formal register avoids contractions and uses longer, more precise formulations.

Erros frequentes
Beste heer Jansen,Geachte heer Jansen,In formal letters, use geachte (not beste which is semi-formal) for proper formality.
Met betrekking aan uw verzoek...Met betrekking tot uw verzoek...The fixed expression is met betrekking tot (not aan) — tot is the correct preposition.
Ik zou u gaarne verzoeken willen...Ik zou u gaarne willen verzoeken...The order is zou + willen + infinitive; gaarne goes before willen.
Bijgevoegd u vindt de documenten.Bijgevoegd vindt u de documenten.After bijgevoegd in first position, inversion: vindt comes before u.
In afwachting op uw reactie.In afwachting van uw reactie.The fixed expression uses van (not op) — in afwachting van is correct.
