Future with Modal Verbs: Zal waarschijnlijk
Dutch expresses predictions and likelihood about the future using zullen combined with adverbs of probability.
Zal/zullen + waarschijnlijk + infinitive:
- AI zal de geneeskunde waarschijnlijk revolutioneren. — AI will probably revolutionize medicine.
- Stamceltherapie zal waarschijnlijk gangbaar worden. — Stem cell therapy will probably become common.
Adverbs of certainty (from strong to weak):
- zeker (certainly): Dit zal zeker veranderen.
- waarschijnlijk (probably): Het zal waarschijnlijk lukken.
- vermoedelijk (presumably): De kosten zullen vermoedelijk dalen.
- mogelijk (possibly): Dit zou mogelijk kunnen helpen.
Zou/zouden + kunnen for possibility:
- Gentherapie zou erfelijke ziekten kunnen genezen. — Gene therapy could cure hereditary diseases.
Verwacht wordt dat... (It is expected that...):
- Verwacht wordt dat de levensverwachting zal stijgen. — It is expected that life expectancy will rise.
Note: zal worden + past participle creates the future passive:
- Nieuwe behandelingen zullen worden ontwikkeld. — New treatments will be developed.
