Indirect Speech: "Hij zei dat..." and "Ze vroeg of..."

When reporting what someone said or asked, Dutch uses indirect speech with dat (that) for statements and of (whether/if) for questions.

Reporting Statements with Dat

Direct: "Ik ben bestolen." → Indirect: Hij zei dat hij bestolen was.

The verb moves to the end (SOV) and often shifts to past tense:

• "Er is een probleem." → Ze zei dat er een probleem was.
• "Je moet naar het politiebureau gaan." → Hij zei dat ik naar het politiebureau moest gaan.

Reporting Questions with Of

Direct: "Heeft u een reisverzekering?" → Indirect: Ze vroeg of ik een reisverzekering had.

• "Wilt u aangifte doen?" → Ze vroeg of ik aangifte wilde doen.
• "Waar is de ambassade?" → Ik vroeg waar de ambassade was.

Key Reporting Verbs

• zeggen dat → to say that
• vertellen dat → to tell that
• vragen of → to ask whether
• vragen + question word → to ask where/when/how
• uitleggen dat → to explain that

Tense Shift

Present → Past in indirect speech:

• is → was, zijn → waren, kan → kon, moet → moest, wil → wilde

Note: The tense shift is not always mandatory in Dutch, especially when the reported information is still true.
