Describing Symptoms with Reflexive Verbs

In Dutch, describing how you feel uses the reflexive verb zich voelen:

Ik voel me niet lekker. — I do not feel well.

Hij voelt zich duizelig. — He feels dizzy.

The reflexive pronoun changes by person: me, je, zich, ons, je, zich. In a subclause, the reflexive pronoun follows the subject:

...omdat ik me niet lekker voel. — ...because I do not feel well.

To describe duration, use al (already/for) + time expression:

Ik heb al drie dagen hoofdpijn. — I have had a headache for three days.

Ik hoest al een week. — I have been coughing for a week.

For when something started, use sinds (since):

Ik voel me misselijk sinds gisteren. — I have felt nauseous since yesterday.

At the doctor, you will hear: "Wat zijn uw klachten?" (What are your complaints?), "Doet het hier pijn?" (Does it hurt here?), and "Ik schrijf een recept voor u uit" (I will write you a prescription).

Note the compound nouns: hoofd + pijn = hoofdpijn, buik + pijn = buikpijn, keel + pijn = keelpijn. Dutch loves compounding!
