The verb "zijn" (to be)
In Dutch, zijn is the most important verb. In the present tense it changes depending on the person:
- ik ben → I am
- jij bent → you are (informal)
- u bent → you are (formal)
- hij/zij is → he/she is
Example: "Ik ben Anna" = I am Anna
Formal vs. Informal
Dutch distinguishes between jij (informal "you") and u (formal "you"):
- Jij/je → use with friends, family, people your age
- U → use with strangers, elders, in professional settings
This also affects greetings:
- Dankjewel → thanks (informal, literally "thank you well")
- Dank u wel → thank you (formal)
- Alsjeblieft → please (informal)
- Alstublieft → please (formal)
Tip: "Dag" is a versatile word — it means both "hello" and "goodbye" depending on context!

Erros frequentes
Goed nacht!Goedenavond!"Goedenacht" is only for bedtime. To greet someone in the evening, say "Goedenavond".
Ik bent AnnaIk ben AnnaWith "ik" (I), always use "ben", not "bent". "Bent" is for "jij".
Dank je u welDank u wel / DankjewelDon't mix formal (u) and informal (je). Choose one: "Dank u wel" or "Dankjewel".
Goede morgenGoedemorgenIn Dutch, "goedemorgen" is written as one word, not two separate words.
Hoe gaat het? — JaHoe gaat het? — Goed, dank je"Hoe gaat het?" is not a yes/no question. Answer with how you feel: "Goed", "Prima", "Het gaat".
