Hedging in Academic Chinese (模糊表达)

In academic writing, hedging (模糊表达) is not weakness — it is precision. Overstating claims is a serious academic error.

Why hedge?

  • Research rarely proves things absolutely
  • Hedging signals that you understand the limits of your evidence
  • Overconfident claims invite stronger criticism

Common hedging patterns

  • 在一定程度上 — to a certain extent
  • 该研究在一定程度上支持了这一假设。
  • 初步表明/显示 — preliminary evidence indicates
  • 调查数据初步表明,该现象与经济因素相关。
  • 不排除...的可能性 — does not rule out the possibility that...
  • 目前的数据不排除其他影响因素的可能性。
  • 有待进一步研究/证实 — requires further research/confirmation
  • 这一结论有待未来的实验进一步证实。

Degree adverbs in academic contexts

Careful use of adverbs signals precision:

  • 较为 (comparatively) → 较为显著 (comparatively significant)
  • 相对 (relatively) → 相对稳定 (relatively stable)
  • 显著 (notably) → more confident than 较为
  • 明显 (clearly/obviously) → the most confident level
