Where Are You From?
In Chinese, nationality is expressed by combining a country name with 人 (rén, person).
我是 + [country] + 人 (Wǒ shì...rén) → "I am [nationality]"
Common country names
- 中国 (Zhōngguó) → China → 中国人 Chinese
- 美国 (Měiguó) → USA → 美国人 American
- 法国 (Fǎguó) → France → 法国人 French
- 英国 (Yīngguó) → UK → 英国人 British
- 德国 (Déguó) → Germany → 德国人 German
- 日本 (Rìběn) → Japan → 日本人 Japanese
Asking where someone is from
- 你是哪国人？ (Nǐ shì nǎ guó rén?) → What nationality are you?
- 你从哪里来？ (Nǐ cóng nǎlǐ lái?) → Where do you come from?
💬 Example: "我是法国人。我从巴黎来。" (Wǒ shì Fǎguórén. Wǒ cóng Bālí lái.) → "I am French. I come from Paris."
