Accents and Dialects

Spanish displays rich dialectal diversity across the world:

  • Castilian (northern peninsular): distinction between c/z [θ] and s [s], pronunciation of final -d, tolerated leísmo for masculine singular
  • Andalusian: aspiration or loss of final -s, ceceo or seseo depending on zone, loss of intervocalic -d- (cansao for cansado)
  • Canarian: generalized seseo, s-aspiration, linguistic bridge between Spain and Latin America
  • Rioplatense: voseo with its own conjugation (vos tenés), rehilado yeísmo (ll/y → [ʃ]), Italian-influenced intonation
  • Caribbean: aspiration or loss of -s, lambdacism (r → l at syllable end), velarization of final -n
  • Mexican: preservation of final -s, weakening of unstressed vowels, retention of some archaisms (¿mande?)
  • Andean: preservation of ll/y distinction, Quechua influence on intonation and vocabulary, retention of archaic forms

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Vos tenés razón (in Spain)
    Tú tienes razón

Voseo is specific to Argentina and other countries; in Spain, tú/tienes is used

  • Le dije a ella (feminine leísmo)
    La vi a ella

Leísmo is only tolerated for masculine singular; for feminine, 'la' must be used

  • El seseo es incorrecto
El seseo es una variante legítima

Seseo is not an error but a legitimate variant spoken by the majority of Spanish speakers

  • Todos los argentinos dicen 'vos'
El voseo varía según la región

Voseo varies even within Argentina; some regions use tú or alternate

  • El español caribeño pierde las eses
El español caribeño aspira las eses

Caribbean s is not lost but aspirated [h] — it is a transformation, not a deletion
