Comparatives and superlatives in Spanish
To compare things in Spanish, use más ... que (more ... than) and menos ... que (less ... than):
- Mi piso es más grande que tu piso. (My apartment is bigger than yours.)
- Esta calle es menos ruidosa que la otra. (This street is less noisy than the other.)
For superlatives, use el/la/los/las más + adjective:
- Es la casa más bonita del barrio. (It's the prettiest house in the neighborhood.)
- Es el piso más pequeño del edificio. (It's the smallest apartment in the building.)
Note the irregular forms: mejor (better/best), peor (worse/worst), mayor (older/oldest), menor (younger/youngest).
Hay vs. Tiene
- Hay (there is / there are) describes what exists in a place: En mi piso hay dos habitaciones. (In my apartment there are two bedrooms.)
- Tiene (it has) describes what something possesses: Mi casa tiene un jardín grande. (My house has a big garden.)
A common mistake is using tiene when talking about existence. Remember: hay = existence, tiene = possession.
