# The Conditional with бы in Russian Negotiations
Russian uses the conditional mood (бы + past tense) extensively in negotiations for polite proposals, hypotheticals, and soft demands.
Forming the Conditional
бы + past tense verb (бы can be placed after the first stressed word):
- Я хотел бы обсудить условия. — I would like to discuss the terms.
- Мы могли бы найти компромисс. — We could find a compromise.
Softening Demands
Instead of a direct imperative, use the conditional:
- Direct: Повысьте зарплату. (Raise the salary. — blunt)
- Polite: Я бы хотел обсудить повышение зарплаты. (I would like to discuss a raise.)
Negotiation Conditionals
- Если бы вы согласились на наши условия, мы бы... — If you agreed to our terms, we would...
- Было бы лучше, если бы... — It would be better if...
- Предлагаю рассмотреть вариант, при котором... — I suggest considering an option where...
Key Pattern: Мы могли бы + infinitive
This is the go-to negotiation phrase:
- Мы могли бы встретиться на полпути. — We could meet halfway.
- Мы могли бы предложить другие условия. — We could offer different terms.

Если бы вы согласитесь, мы бы подпишем.Если бы вы согласились, мы бы подписали.Both verbs in бы conditionals use past tense: согласились and подписали (not future/present forms).
Мы должны идти в компромисс.Мы должны идти на компромисс.The fixed expression is идти на компромисс (на + accusative), not идти в компромисс.
Я настаиваю в своей позиции.Я настаиваю на своей позиции.Настаивать takes на + prepositional: настаивать на чём-то (to insist on something).
Давайте обсудить детали контракта.Давайте обсудим детали контракта.After давайте (let's), use the perfective first-person plural (subjunctive form): обсудим, not the infinitive обсудить.
Мы могли найти решение.Мы могли бы найти решение.The conditional requires бы: мы могли бы (we could). Мы могли without бы just means 'we were able to' (past tense fact).
