Writing a Postcard
Informal Letter Structure
A Portuguese postcard follows this format:
1. Greeting: Olá / Querido(a) + name 2. Opening: Say where you are and how you feel 3. Body: Describe what you see and do 4. Closing: Um abraço / Beijinhos / Com saudades
"Estar a" + Infinitive for Current Activities
Describe what you are doing right now:
- Estou a escrever-te de Lisboa. (I'm writing to you from Lisbon.)
- Estamos a passar férias no Algarve. (We're spending holidays in the Algarve.)
Describing Places with Adjectives
Remember adjective agreement:
- A praia é maravilhosa. (The beach is wonderful.)
- Os restaurantes são excelentes. (The restaurants are excellent.)
- A paisagem é deslumbrante. (The landscape is stunning.)
"Saudade" - A Portuguese Concept
Saudade is untranslatable — it's a deep longing for someone or something:
- Tenho muitas saudades tuas. (I miss you a lot.)
- Saudades de casa. (Missing home.)
Tip: "Saudade" is considered one of the most beautiful words in the Portuguese language and is central to Portuguese culture and fado music.
