When visiting a doctor in Portugal, you need the pretérito perfeito composto to describe symptoms that have been recurring.

Tenho + past participle (recurring situation up to now):

  • Tenho tido dores de cabeça. — I have been having headaches.
  • Tenho dormido mal. — I have been sleeping badly.

Desde for when it started:

  • Tenho febre desde ontem. — I have had a fever since yesterday.
  • Doem-me as costas desde há três dias. — My back has been hurting for three days.

Describing pain location:

  • Dói-me a cabeça / o estômago / a garganta. — My head/stomach/throat hurts.
  • Tenho uma dor no peito. — I have a pain in my chest.

At the doctor's office:

  • O que é que sente? — What do you feel? (doctor asks)
  • Desde quando tem estes sintomas? — Since when have you had these symptoms?
  • Vou passar-lhe uma receita. — I will write you a prescription.

Tip: In European Portuguese, the reflexive pronoun comes after the verb with a hyphen: dói-me, sinto-me.

    In European Portuguese, the pronoun follows the verb: 'dói-me' not 'me dói'.

  • Tenho tido dor de cabeça desde três dias.
    Tenho tido dor de cabeça há três dias.

    Use 'há' for a duration (three days), 'desde' for a starting point.

  • Eu sou alérgica a a penicilina.
    Eu sou alérgica a penicilina.

    Don't double the preposition — one 'a' is enough.

  • Tenho febre há ontem à noite.
    Tenho febre desde ontem à noite.

    Use 'desde' with a specific point in time (ontem à noite), 'há' with a duration (há três dias).

  • O médico passou-me um receita.
    O médico passou-me uma receita.

    'Receita' is feminine — use 'uma' not 'um'.
