This lesson combines opinion-giving with two important grammar points for talking about duration and past events.
Desde / Há for duration:
- Uso redes sociais desde 2015. — I have been using social media since 2015.
- Uso redes sociais há dez anos. — I have been using social media for ten years.
Desde = since (a specific point in time). Há = for (a duration of time). Both use the present tense in Portuguese when the action is still ongoing.
Pretérito perfeito composto for repeated recent actions:
- Tenho passado muito tempo no telemóvel. — I have been spending a lot of time on my phone.
- As redes sociais têm mudado a sociedade. — Social media has been changing society.
This tense is formed with ter (present) + past participle. It emphasises repetition or continuity up to the present — unlike English "have done" which can be a single completed event.
Tip: European Portuguese uses ecrã (screen) and telemóvel (mobile phone), not the Brazilian tela and celular.
