Phone Calls in Portuguese
Answering the Phone
In Portugal, people answer the phone by saying "Estou?" (literally "I am?") or "Sim?" (Yes?). This is different from Brazilian Portuguese which uses "Alô."
The Verb Ligar (to call)
- Eu ligo — I call
- Tu ligas — You call
- Ele/Ela liga — He/She calls
- Nós ligamos — We call
Eu ligo-te mais tarde. — I'll call you later.
Asking Who Is Speaking
- Quem fala? — Who is speaking?
- Com quem deseja falar? — Who would you like to speak with?
- Posso falar com...? — May I speak with...?

Telemóvel vs Telefone
In European Portuguese, a mobile phone is called telemóvel (not "celular" as in Brazil). A landline is simply telefone.
