Critical proofreading in Korean
C1 Korean writers must identify and correct errors that undermine clarity and consistency. The most common C1-level errors involve particles, aspect endings, and spacing.
Common C1 Korean errors:
1. Particle confusion (이/가 vs. 은/는)
- Topic marker 은/는 sets up contrast or introduces a new topic.
- Subject marker 이/가 focuses on the actor of the action.
- Error: 오늘은 비가 왔어요 (correct) vs. 오늘이 비는 왔어요 (incorrect — particle swap).
2. Aspect endings (-았/었다 vs. -아/어 있다)
- Error: 창문이 닫았다 → Correct: 창문이 닫혀 있다 (the window is (in a) closed (state)).
3. Spacing (띄어쓰기)
- 안되다 (not possible) vs. 안 되다 (do not, prohibition).
- 이 것 vs. 이것 (this).
4. 일관성 (consistency) — Using the same honorific level throughout a document.
Proofreading checklist:
- Check particle accuracy.
- Verify honorific consistency.
- Read aloud to find unnatural phrasing.
- Look for omitted verbs or particles.

Veelgemaakte fouten
창문이 닫았다창문이 닫혀 있다닫았다 describes a completed action (someone closed it); 닫혀 있다 describes the resulting state (it is in a closed state). The stative form is required here.
오늘이 비는 왔어요오늘은 비가 왔어요은/는 is the topic marker and goes with 오늘 (today as the topic); 이/가 is the subject marker and goes with 비 (rain as the grammatical subject).
안되다안 되다안되다 means to be in a bad state / not work out; 안 되다 means must not do / is not allowed. The spacing changes the meaning entirely.
이 글은 일관성이 없습니다다이 글은 일관성이 없습니다Double -다 is a common copy-paste proofreading error; always verify final sentence endings when editing.
보고서 전체에서 격식체와 반말을 섞어서 사용했다보고서 전체에서 격식체를 일관되게 사용해야 한다Mixing 합쇼체 and 반말 in the same document breaks register consistency, which is a critical C1 writing error.
