Constructive feedback in Korean
Giving feedback in Korean requires a careful balance: acknowledge effort, deliver the critique diplomatically, then offer a way forward. The core pattern is:
-지만...-(으)면 좋겠다 "Although [strength]... it would be good if [improvement]"
- 발표 내용은 잘 정리됐지만, 시간 배분을 더 신경 쓰면 좋겠다.
(The presentation content was well organised, but it would be good to pay more attention to timing.)
Structure: Acknowledge → Suggest → Forward 1. 인정하다 — Acknowledge what was done well first. 2. -지만 — Signal the pivot without bluntness. 3. -(으)면 좋겠다 — Frame the suggestion as a wish, not a command.
Softening strategies:
- 조금 더 — "a little more" — reduces the weight of the critique.
- 혹시 — "by any chance" — makes a suggestion tentative.
- 생각해 보셨나요? — "Have you considered?" — invites reflection rather than directs.
The key is that constructive feedback in Korean should feel collaborative, not evaluative.
