How Hangeul Works
Hangeul is the Korean alphabet, invented in 1443. Unlike the Roman alphabet, Korean letters are grouped into syllable blocks.
Each syllable block has:
- An initial consonant (초성)
- A vowel (중성)
- An optional final consonant (받침/종성)
Example: 한 = ㅎ(h) + ㅏ(a) + ㄴ(n) = "han"
Basic vowels: ㅏ(a), ㅓ(eo), ㅗ(o), ㅜ(u), ㅡ(eu), ㅣ(i), ㅐ(ae), ㅔ(e)
Basic consonants: ㄱ(g/k), ㄴ(n), ㄷ(d/t), ㄹ(r/l), ㅁ(m), ㅂ(b/p), ㅅ(s), ㅇ(silent/ng), ㅈ(j), ㅎ(h)
The consonant ㅇ is silent at the start of a syllable but makes an "ng" sound at the end.
Hangeul can be learned to read in just a few hours — it is one of the most logical writing systems in the world!
