Japanese Slang and Colloquial Speech

Understanding casual Japanese is essential for true fluency. While formal registers dominate textbooks, real conversations among friends use entirely different patterns.

Youth Language (若者言葉)

Japanese youth language evolves rapidly. Words like ヤバい have expanded from purely negative ("dangerous") to include positive meanings ("amazing"). エモい (from "emotional") and チルい (from "chill") show how English loanwords get adapted with the い-adjective suffix.

Abbreviations and Contractions

Spoken Japanese heavily contracts forms:

  • 〜ている〜てる (progressive)
  • 〜なければ〜なきゃ (must)
  • 〜というのは〜っていうのは〜ってのは (topic introduction)

Internet Slang

Online Japanese has its own vocabulary:

  • (kusa, "grass") = LOL, from www (warawaraware) which looks like grass
  • 推し originally from idol culture, now means any favorite
  • (swamp) = being deeply obsessed with something

Understanding slang is crucial, but using it requires knowing your audience. Slang in the wrong context can seem disrespectful or immature.

Uitdrukkingen

  • マジで言ってんの?Are you serious? (casual disbelief)
  • ちょっと待って、ヤバくない?Wait, isn't that crazy? (reacting to news)
  • それはウケるんだけどThat's hilarious though (amused reaction)
  • ワンチャンいけるかもThere might be a chance (hopeful)
  • 推しが尊いMy favorite is precious (fandom culture)
  • 完全に沼にハマったI've fallen completely into the obsession

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • 先生、マジですか?
    先生、本当ですか?

マジ is casual slang inappropriate with a teacher. Use 本当 in formal or semi-formal contexts.

  • ヤバい美味しいです
    ヤバいくらい美味しい

Mixing ヤバい (casual) with です (polite) creates a jarring register clash. Stay consistent within one register.

  • 部長、それウケますね
    部長、それは面白いですね

ウケる is youth slang inappropriate in a workplace context with a superior. Use 面白い with polite form.

  • この映画、エモいと存じます
    この映画、感動的だと思います

Combining slang エモい with the ultra-formal 存じます is absurdly contradictory. Match your register.

  • 草を生やす
    笑える / ウケる

草 is written internet slang only. Saying 草を生やす in speech sounds forced and unnatural.
