Passato prossimo + Imperfetto mixed

These two past tenses are used together to narrate a trip or write a postcard.

Passato prossimo

For completed, punctual actions with a result.

  • Ho visitato Roma. (I visited Rome.)
  • Ho assaggiato la pasta fresca. (I tasted fresh pasta.)
  • Ho scoperto un mercato meraviglioso. (I discovered a wonderful market.)

Imperfetto

For descriptions, states, ongoing actions in the past.

  • La città era meravigliosa. (The city was wonderful.)
  • Il mare brillava al sole. (The sea was shining in the sun.)
  • Faceva caldo e c'era tanta gente. (It was hot and there were many people.)

Both together — the key example

  • Ho visitato Roma ed era meravigliosa.

→ I visited Rome and it was wonderful. (action + description)

  • Ho esplorato il centro storico mentre pioveva leggermente.

→ I explored the historic centre while it was raining lightly.

Memory tip

  • Passato prossimo = film (the events that move the story forward)
  • Imperfetto = scenery (the backdrop, descriptions, states)

    After vorrei che, use the imperfect subjunctive (fossi), not the indicative (eri)

    For a completed action, use passato prossimo (è stato), not imperfetto (era)
