Passato prossimo with per and da
In Italian, the passato prossimo is used to describe past professional experiences or ongoing situations.
With per (completed duration)
Use per + duration to indicate a finished period:
- Ho lavorato a Milano per tre anni. → I worked in Milan for three years.
- Ho lavorato in quella ditta per due anni. → I worked in that company for two years.
With da (ongoing situation)
Use da + starting point for a situation still continuing:
- Sono libero professionista dal 2020. → I have been freelance since 2020.
- Lavoro in questo settore da cinque anni. → I have been working in this sector for five years.

- Per → finished duration (like "for" with a past tense in English)
- Da → since a specific moment, situation still ongoing
- With da, Italian often uses the present tense where English uses the present perfect
