Ordering at the Bar: Vorrei... / Mi dà...? / Posso avere...?

In Italy, there are several polite ways to order at a bar or café. Each has a slightly different level of formality.

Vorrei... (I would like... — conditional tense, very polite):

• Vorrei un caffè, per favore. → I'd like a coffee, please.
• Vorrei un cappuccino e un cornetto. → I'd like a cappuccino and a croissant.

Mi dà...? (can you give me...? — polite and very common in everyday Italian):

• Mi dà un caffè macchiato? → Can you give me a macchiato?
• Mi dà dell'acqua frizzante? → Can you give me some sparkling water?

Posso avere...? (can I have...? — very common, slightly informal):

• Posso avere un tè con latte? → Can I have a tea with milk?
• Posso avere il conto? → Can I have the bill?

Prendo... (I'll have... — direct, very natural in Italian):

• Prendo un caffè. → I'll have a coffee.
• Per me, un'aranciata. → For me, an orange soda.

Useful expressions at the bar:

• per favore → please
• grazie → thank you
• al banco → at the counter (usually cheaper)
• al tavolo → at the table (there may be a surcharge)
• il conto, per favore → the bill, please
• quanto viene? → how much is it?

Types of Italian coffee:

• un caffè → espresso (the default)
• un caffè macchiato → espresso with a drop of milk
• un cappuccino → espresso with steamed milk (only in the morning!)
• un caffè lungo → a longer espresso
• un caffè corretto → espresso with a shot of liqueur

💬 Esempio: "Vorrei un cappuccino e un cornetto, per favore." → "I would like a cappuccino and a croissant, please."

💬 Esempio: "Prendo un caffè macchiato al banco." → "I'll have a macchiato at the counter."
