Hindi Collocations: Light Verb Constructions
Hindi has a rich system of light verb (क्रियार्थक संयोग) constructions where a noun carries the main semantic content and a light verb provides grammatical information.
Common light verbs and their semantic roles:
- करना (to do): action/process — निर्णय करना, कार्य करना, प्रयास करना
- लेना (to take): inward/completed action — निर्णय लेना, साँस लेना, जानकारी लेना
- देना (to give): outward action — जानकारी देना, आदेश देना, धोखा देना
- होना (to be/become): state change — परिवर्तन होना, नुकसान होना, सफलता मिलना
Collocation types:
- Noun + करना: most productive, covers vast semantic range
- Noun + लेना vs करना: लेना implies agency and completion; करना is more neutral
- Fixed collocations: ध्यान रखना (not ध्यान करना), नज़र रखना, कदम उठाना
