Advanced punctuation is a powerful tool for writers at C2 level. In German, the Geviertstrich (em dash) — used like this — creates dramatic pauses or asides. It is stronger than a comma but less formal than brackets.
The Semikolon connects two independent clauses more closely than a full stop but more distinctly than a comma: Er kam spät; sie war schon gegangen. It is the most underused punctuation mark in German.
The Doppelpunkt introduces explanations, lists, or direct speech. Auslassungspunkte create suspense or signal an unfinished thought...
German is particularly strict about commas: every Nebensatz requires one. Kommafehler are among the most frequent errors, even for native speakers. The challenge at C2 level is to avoid the Bandwurmsatz — those interminable sentences typical of academic German — while mastering expressive punctuation.
