The Imparfait of Être and Avoir
While the passé composé describes completed actions, the imparfait describes how things were — situations, feelings, and descriptions in the past.
C'était (It was)
Use c'était to give your opinion about a past experience:
C'était génial ! — It was great!
C'était ennuyeux. — It was boring.
C'était très cher. — It was very expensive.
Il y avait (There was / There were)
Use il y avait to describe what existed or was present:
Il y avait beaucoup de monde. — There were lots of people.
Il n'y avait pas de bruit. — There was no noise.

Combine passé composé (what happened) with imparfait (how it was):
J'ai visité Paris et c'était magnifique.
On a mangé au restaurant, c'était délicieux.
