De kunst van Engelse poëzie

Het Shakespeareaanse sonnet

Het canonieke Engelse sonnet (Shakespeare) bestaat uit:

  • Drie kwatrijnen (ABAB CDCD EFEF)
  • Een slotcouplet (GG) — de volta: wending, oplossing, paradox

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" (Sonnet 18) — de volta komt in het couplet: "So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, / So long lives this..."

Vrij vers (free verse)

Zonder vast metrum of verplicht rijmschema. Whitman (Leaves of Grass) geldt als de Amerikaanse grondlegger. Formele vrijheid betekent niet dat er geen structuur is — vrij vers creëert zijn eigen ritme door herhaling, anafoor en cadans.

Enjambement

Enjambement creëert spanning tussen de visuele pauze aan het einde van de regel en de syntactische voortzetting. Keats gebruikt het meesterlijk in Endymion: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever: / Its loveliness increases; it will never / Pass into nothingness."

Alliteratie en assonantie

  • Alliteratie: herhaling van een beginklank van medeklinkers — "The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew" (Coleridge)
  • Assonantie: herhaling van een klinkerklank — "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain"

Beide technieken creëren muzikaliteit en klankmatige samenhang.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • This poem has alliteration because the words start with the same letter.
    The poem deploys alliteration — the recurring /b/ sound in 'bare ruined choirs' creates a muted, elegiac effect.

    Alliteratie wordt bepaald door de *klank*, niet door de letter. 'Phone' en 'fall' allitereren, net als 'church' en 'chain': beide hebben /tʃ/.

  • The poem rhymes at the end of each line.
    The poem employs an ABAB CDCD EFEF rhyme scheme across three quatrains, resolved by a closing couplet with a GG rhyme.

    Een rijmschema beschrijven vereist precieze notatie (ABAB, ABBA, AABB …), niet alleen een algemene vaststelling.

  • The volta is a type of stanza.
    The volta is the pivotal turn in a sonnet — typically at the couplet in the Shakespearean form, or at line 9 in the Petrarchan form.

    Een volta is geen strofe, maar een retorisch en emotioneel *keerpunt*.

  • Free verse has no rules.
    Free verse rejects fixed metre and rhyme but constructs meaning through lineation, rhythm, and sonic patterning — it has its own internal logic.

    'No rules' is onjuist. Vrij vers berust op visuele spanning, cadans en ruimte en heeft een eigen interne logica.

  • Assonance is the same as rhyme.
    Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within words, whereas rhyme requires matching sounds at the end of lines. 'Light' and 'mine' share assonance (/aɪ/); they do not rhyme.

    Het onderscheid is precies: interne assonantie is niet hetzelfde als eindrijm.

  • Iambic pentameter means ten syllables per line.
    Iambic pentameter consists of five iambic feet (unstressed-stressed pairs), totalling ten syllables — but the rhythmic pattern, not the count, is the defining feature.

    Jambische pentameter herleiden tot het aantal lettergrepen negeert de kern: vijf voeten met afwisseling van onbeklemtoonde en beklemtoonde lettergrepen.
