The progressive aspect: 在/正在 + Verb
To say what is happening right now, use 正在 (zhèngzài) or 在 (zài) before the verb. This is the equivalent of the English "-ing" form.
Structures
- 正在 + V: emphasizes "right now at this moment"
- 她正在开会。(Tā zhèngzài kāi huì.) — She is in a meeting right now.
- 在 + V: general ongoing action
- 他在发邮件。(Tā zài fā yóujiàn.) — He is sending an email.
- V + 着 (zhe): describes a continuing state
- 门开着。(Mén kāizhe.) — The door is open (continuously).
Adding 呢 for extra emphasis
Adding 呢 at the end makes the ongoing nature more vivid:
- 我在打电话呢！(Wǒ zài dǎ diànhuà ne!) — I'm on the phone right now!
Negative form
Use 没有 + V or 不在 + V to say something is not happening:
- 他没有在开会。(Tā méiyǒu zài kāi huì.) — He is not in a meeting.

- 她正在开会，不能接电话。Say she is in a meeting and cannot take calls
- 我在发邮件呢！Say you are sending an email right now
- 他们在讨论新项目。Say they are discussing a new project
