Asking and Saying Your Name
In Chinese, you ask for someone's name using 叫 (jiào) or 姓 (xìng). Each has a different use.
Two ways to ask a name
- 你叫什么名字? (Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?) → What is your name? (casual)
- 您贵姓? (Nín guìxìng?) → What is your honorable surname? (very formal)
吗 (ma) — Yes/No questions
Add 吗 at the end of any statement to turn it into a yes/no question.
💬 Example: "你是学生。" (Nǐ shì xuésheng.) → "You are a student."
💬 With 吗: "你是学生吗?" (Nǐ shì xuésheng ma?) → "Are you a student?"
Subject pronouns
- 我 (wǒ) — I / me
- 你 (nǐ) — you (informal)
- 您 (nín) — you (formal/polite)
- 他 (tā) — he / 她 (tā) — she (same sound, different character)
💬 Example: "我叫王明。你叫什么名字?" (Wǒ jiào Wáng Míng. Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi?) → "My name is Wang Ming. What is your name?"
