The Japanese Economy
Understanding Japanese economic discourse requires mastery of specialized terminology and the ability to construct analytical arguments using nominalization and abstract noun phrases.
Economic Terminology
Japanese economic terms are predominantly kanji compounds that are transparent once you know the components:
- 金融緩和 (monetary + easing) — the Bank of Japan's signature policy
- 少子高齢化 (few children + aging) — Japan's defining demographic challenge
- 国内総生産 (domestic + gross + production) — GDP
Nominalization in Economic Writing
Academic and economic Japanese heavily uses nominalization to create abstract concepts:
- 経済の活性化 — economic revitalization (verb → noun)
- 格差の拡大 — widening of inequality
- 成長の鈍化 — slowdown of growth
Argumentative Essay Structure
Economic analysis in Japanese follows a clear pattern using である体:
- 〜が指摘されている — it has been pointed out that~
- 〜が課題として挙げられる — ~ is raised as a challenge
- 〜を踏まえると — taking ~ into account
Economic literacy in Japanese opens doors to understanding one of the world's most complex and fascinating economies.
Expressions
- 景気が回復する兆しがあるThere are signs of economic recovery
- 少子高齢化に歯止めをかけるTo put a stop to demographic decline
- 財政赤字が膨らむ一方だThe fiscal deficit just keeps growing
- 円安が輸出企業を後押しするThe weak yen boosts export companies
- 構造改革が急務だStructural reform is urgently needed
- 持続可能な成長を目指すTo aim for sustainable growth
Common mistakes
景気がいい景気が好調だいい is too colloquial for economic analysis. 好調 (favorable/strong) is the appropriate analytical term.
日本のお金の問題日本の財政問題お金の問題 (money problem) is childishly vague. 財政問題 (fiscal issues) is the precise economic term.
人が少なくなっている労働力人口が減少している人が少ない is imprecise. 労働力人口が減少している (the working population is declining) specifies the economic dimension.
株が上がった株価が上昇した株が上がった is casual. 株価が上昇した uses the proper noun 株価 and formal verb 上昇する for economic reporting.
円が安くなった円安が進行した円が安くなった describes a fact simply. 円安が進行した (yen weakness has progressed) is the economic framing.
