Hay + places
Use hay (there is / there are) to talk about what exists in your neighborhood:
- En mi barrio hay una panadería. (In my neighborhood there is a bakery.)
- ¿Hay un banco cerca de aquí? (Is there a bank near here?)
- No hay biblioteca en mi barrio. (There is no library in my neighborhood.)
Hay is invariable — it does not change for singular or plural:
- Hay un parque. (There is a park.)
- Hay dos supermercados. (There are two supermarkets.)
Cerca de / Lejos de / Al lado de
These prepositions describe location relative to other places:
- cerca de (near): La farmacia está cerca de mi casa. (The pharmacy is near my house.)
- lejos de (far from): El banco está lejos de aquí. (The bank is far from here.)
- al lado de (next to): La iglesia está al lado de la plaza. (The church is next to the square.)
Other useful location words: enfrente de (in front of / across from), entre (between), detrás de (behind).
