Portuguese uses specific structures to discuss medical advances and future possibilities:
Conditional for hypothetical treatments:
- Se a terapia genética fosse acessível, muitas doenças seriam erradicadas. (If gene therapy were accessible, many diseases would be eradicated.)
Future subjunctive for medical predictions:
- Quando a telemedicina se generalizar, o acesso à saúde melhorará. (When telemedicine becomes widespread, healthcare access will improve.)
Passive voice for scientific processes:
- O biomarcador foi identificado durante o ensaio clínico. (The biomarker was identified during the clinical trial.)
The future subjunctive (generalizar) expresses certainty about future medical developments, while the imperfect subjunctive (fosse) discusses hypothetical scenarios.

Типичные ошибки
A doença foi diagnosticado cedo.A doença foi diagnosticada cedo.The past participle must agree in gender: 'doença' is feminine, so 'diagnosticada'.
Quando a cura será descoberta...Quando a cura for descoberta...After 'quando' for an uncertain future, use the future subjunctive ('for'), not the future indicative ('será').
O médico recomendou que ele fazia exames.O médico recomendou que ele fizesse exames.'Recomendar que' requires the subjunctive ('fizesse'), not the indicative ('fazia').
