Managing the Budget
Expressing Obligation: "Ter de" vs "Ter que"
Both forms express obligation, but ter de is preferred in European Portuguese:
- Tenho de poupar mais. (I have to save more.)
- Temos de reduzir as despesas. (We have to reduce expenses.)
Comparatives for Budgeting
Use comparatives to discuss financial choices:
- Gasto mais do que ganho. (I spend more than I earn.)
- Este plano é menos caro do que o outro. (This plan is less expensive than the other.)
- Poupo tanto quanto possível. (I save as much as possible.)
"Conseguir" + Infinitive
Use conseguir to express ability related to financial goals:
- Não consigo poupar todos os meses. (I can't save every month.)
- Conseguimos pagar as dívidas. (We managed to pay the debts.)
Tip: In Portugal, "IRS" refers to personal income tax (Imposto sobre o Rendimento das Pessoas Singulares), not the American institution.
