Repairs and DIY
Describing Problems: "Estar" + Adjective
Use estar for temporary states/problems:
- A torneira está a pingar. (The tap is dripping.)
- A luz está avariada. (The light is broken.)
- A porta está partida. (The door is broken.)
Imperative for Instructions
Use the imperativo to give DIY instructions:
- Aperta o parafuso. (Tighten the screw.)
- Desliga a eletricidade primeiro. (Turn off the electricity first.)
- Chama o canalizador. (Call the plumber.)
"Precisar de" + Noun for Materials
- Preciso de um martelo e pregos. (I need a hammer and nails.)
- Precisamos de chamar um eletricista. (We need to call an electrician.)
"Conseguir" vs "Saber" for Ability
- Sei arranjar torneiras. (I know how to fix taps — learned skill.)
- Consigo arranjar isto sozinho. (I can fix this by myself — ability right now.)
Tip: In Portugal, "arranjar" is more commonly used than "reparar" in everyday speech for fixing things.
