Adding arguments:
- Além disso — Moreover / Furthermore
- Para além de — In addition to
Contrasting ideas:
- Contudo / No entanto / Todavia — However / Nevertheless
- Por outro lado — On the other hand
- Apesar de — Despite
Showing cause and consequence:
- Por conseguinte / Portanto — Consequently / Therefore
- Por isso — That is why
Structuring a balanced argument:
- Por um lado... por outro lado... — On the one hand... on the other hand...
Example: Por um lado, a internet facilita a comunicação. Por outro lado, pode causar dependência.
Note: European Portuguese favours contudo and no entanto over the more Brazilian porém.
