Text Messages in Portuguese
The Verb Enviar (to send)
- Eu envio — I send
- Tu envias — You send
- Ele/Ela envia — He/She sends
- Nós enviamos — We send
Envio-te uma mensagem. — I'll send you a message.
The Verb Escrever (to write)
- Eu escrevo — I write
- Tu escreves — You write
- Ele/Ela escreve — He/She writes
- Nós escrevemos — We write
Common Texting Abbreviations
Portuguese texting uses abbreviations just like other languages:
- tb = também (also)
- pq = porque (because)
- qd = quando (when)
- msg = mensagem (message)
- bjs = beijos (kisses — common sign-off)
- obg = obrigado/a (thanks)
Informal vs Formal Messages
Informal texts often drop the subject pronoun and use shorter forms:
- Mando-te msg depois. — I'll text you later.
- Já recebi! — Already got it!
Formal messages use complete sentences:
- Envio-lhe a informação solicitada. — I send you the requested information.

Eu mando uma mensagem a tu.Eu mando-te uma mensagem.Use the clitic pronoun 'te' attached to the verb with a hyphen, not 'a tu'
Eu envio a mensagem para ele.Eu envio-lhe a mensagem.In European Portuguese, use the indirect object clitic 'lhe' instead of 'para ele' in most cases
Eu escrevo uma mensagem para ti.Eu escrevo-te uma mensagem.Clitic pronouns attach to the verb; 'para ti' is understood but less natural in texting
Eu recebi tua mensagem.Eu recebi a tua mensagem.In European Portuguese, possessives require the definite article: 'a tua mensagem' not 'tua mensagem'
Eu vou responder tu.Eu vou responder-te.'Responder' takes an indirect object clitic; use 'responder-te' (reply to you)
