Talking About the Future: -(으)ㄹ 것이다

In Korean, the construction -(으)ㄹ 것이다 expresses future events, predictions, or intentions. It is one of the most common ways to talk about what will happen or what you think will occur.

How to form it

• Verb stem ending in a vowel → add -ㄹ 것이다
• 하다 → 할 것이다 (will do)
• 되다 → 될 것이다 (will become)
• Verb stem ending in a consonant → add -을 것이다
• 먹다 → 먹을 것이다 (will eat)
• 읽다 → 읽을 것이다 (will read)

Spoken vs written

In speech, 것이다 often contracts to 거다 or 거예요:

• 인공지능이 세상을 바꿀 거예요. (AI will change the world.)

Prediction vs intention

This form can express both a prediction (something you think will happen) and a stated intention (something you plan to do). Context makes the meaning clear.

• 이 알고리즘이 더 정확해질 것이다. (This algorithm will become more accurate — prediction)
• 저는 AI를 공부할 것이다. (I will study AI — intention)
