Modali di cortesia (Politeness modals)
In Italian, to make polite requests to neighbours, you use the conditional of modal verbs.
Le dispiacerebbe...? (Would you mind...?)
- Le dispiacerebbe abbassare la musica? (Would you mind turning down the music?)
- Le dispiacerebbe non parcheggiare davanti al garage? (Would you mind not parking in front of the garage?)
Potrebbe per favore...? (Could you please...?)
- Potrebbe per favore fare meno rumore dopo le 22? (Could you please make less noise after 10pm?)
- Potrebbe parlarmi più lentamente? (Could you speak to me more slowly?)
Stavo chiedendo se potrebbe... (I was wondering if you could...)
- Stavo chiedendo se potrebbe tenere il cane dentro la notte. (I was wondering if you could keep the dog inside at night.)
- Stavo chiedendo se potrebbe spostare la macchina. (I was wondering if you could move the car.)
Levels of politeness
- Potrebbe...? → polite (common between neighbours)
- Le dispiacerebbe...? → very polite (formal tone)
- Stavo chiedendo se... → extremely polite (maximum indirectness)

Stavo chiedendo se potresti...Stavo chiedendo se potrebbe...When using Lei (formal you), use potrebbe (3rd pers. sing.) not potresti (2nd pers. sing.)
