Quantities at the market

In Italian, to express precise quantities, you use fixed expressions followed by di + noun.

un mazzo di + vegetable → a bunch of (e.g. un mazzo di basilico)
una dozzina di + noun → a dozen (e.g. una dozzina di uova)
200 grammi di / due etti di + food → 200 grams of
mezzo chilo di + food → half a kilo of
un chilo di + food → a kilo of

Note that etto (100 grams) is specific to Italy: you say tre etti di prosciutto for 300 grams of ham. This unit, derived from ettogrammo, is very common in food shops but does not exist in other Romance languages.

Vorrei mezzo chilo di pomodori maturi. (I'd like half a kilo of ripe tomatoes.) Mi dà una dozzina di uova fresche? (Could you give me a dozen fresh eggs?)
