How much does it cost?

Quanto costa? / Quanto costano?

In Italian, to ask the price of something, you use two different forms depending on whether the item is singular or plural.

Asking prices:

• Quanto costa? (singular item) → Quanto costa questa borsa? (How much does this bag cost?)
• Quanto costano? (plural items) → Quanto costano queste scarpe? (How much do these shoes cost?)

Demonstrative adjectives (questo/quello):

You often use demonstratives when pointing at items:

• questo/questa → this (near you): questo vestito, questa gonna
• quello/quella → that (far from you): quel vestito, quella gonna
• questi/queste → these: questi pantaloni, queste scarpe
• quelli/quelle → those: quei pantaloni, quelle scarpe

Decimal numbers and prices:

In Italy, prices in euros use a comma (not a period) for decimals:

• 1,50 € → un euro e cinquanta (centesimi)
• 2,99 € → due euro e novantanove
• 0,80 € → ottanta centesimi
• 15,00 € → quindici euro
• 100,00 € → cento euro

Note: The word euro does not change in the plural: un euro, due euro, cento euro.

Useful shopping phrases:

• È troppo caro/a. → It's too expensive.
• C'è uno sconto? → Is there a discount?
• Lo/La prendo. → I'll take it.
• Posso pagare con la carta? → Can I pay by card?
