Mastering tone and voice in French writing means adapting your style to the reader and purpose while handling subtleties like irony.

Adapting tone to the reader (destinataire):

Autoritaire: Il est impératif que vous respectiez les délais. (It is imperative that you respect the deadlines.)
Conversationnel: N'hésitez pas à me contacter si vous avez des questions. (Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.)
Détaché: Les résultats suggèrent une corrélation sans causalité établie. (The results suggest a correlation without established causality.)
Engagé: Nous devons agir maintenant, ensemble, pour changer les choses. (We must act now, together, to change things.)

Written irony (ironie à l'écrit): Irony in French writing relies on context and subtle markers:

C'est évidemment la meilleure idée qu'on ait jamais eue. (It's obviously the best idea anyone has ever had.) — The adverb évidemment signals sarcasm.
On ne saurait mieux dire. (One couldn't have said it better.) — Can be sincere or ironic depending on context.

Register and voice:

The voix narrative can be personal (je), collective (nous/on), or impersonal (il convient de).
A sous-entendu (subtext) allows you to convey meaning without stating it explicitly.
The registre must match the context: a cover letter (soutenu), a blog post (courant), a text message (familier).

Conveying the right tone:

Transmettre un message avec le bon ton est un art. (Conveying a message with the right tone is an art.)
Le sous-entendu permet de dire sans dire. (Subtext allows you to say without saying.)

Le ton de ce texte est trop autoritaire.The tone of this text is too authoritative.
Adaptez votre voix au destinataire.Adapt your voice to the recipient.
Ce registre est trop familier.This register is too informal for this context.
Le sous-entendu est clair.The subtext is clear.
Transmettez un message clair.One must convey a clear and engaged message.
Le ton conversationnel met à l'aise.A conversational tone puts the reader at ease.
Un ton détaché convient à l'analyse.A detached tone suits scientific analysis.
L'ironie est un art subtil à l'écrit.Irony is a subtle art in writing.
C'est évidemment la meilleure idée...It's obviously the best idea... (ironic)
On ne saurait mieux dire.One couldn't have said it better. (can be ironic)

Adaptez le ton : un registre conversationnel convient mieux à un blog.
Instead of just identifying the problem, suggest the appropriate tone/register for the context.

Le sous-entendu transparaît clairement.
Transparaître is more elegant and formal than être évident when discussing textual implications.
~~Il faut transmettre le message au destinataire.~~
Il convient de transmettre le message au destinataire.
Il convient de is more appropriate in formal writing about tone and style than il faut.
~~C'est ironique. (flat statement)~~
L'ironie du propos ne manquera pas d'échapper à personne.
Explicitly labeling something as ironic is less elegant. The indirect formulation is more sophisticated.

Un ton plus engagé permettrait de mieux captiver le lecteur.
Offer a constructive alternative rather than just criticizing. Use conditional for diplomatic suggestion.
